]]>Michaels is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and collecting insects is much more than just a hobby. She’s an entomologist with a B.S. in organismal biology and a M.Sc. in ecology and evolutionary biology, who spends her days teaching biology at Trident Technical College and volunteering at The Charleston Museum as their resident insect collection curator.
Michaels eventually decided to share her fascination with insects on social media and people took notice. Her Instagram page The Bug Lady became a huge hit with people who are trying to learn more about these curious creatures, and she even started hosting workshops for everyone who’s in the mood to take a deeper dive into the world of entomology.
“Bug lady events have really taken shape over the last year. I host workshops on how to prepare insects as you would for scientific collections, teach all ages about the world of entomology, and will be launching some insect displays for sale on my stories,” she wrote on her Instagram.

]]>Heindel is known as Insect Mother on Instagram, and she certainly lives up to this quirky nickname. She attracted over 60,000 followers to her page with her unique art pieces, which are a true love letter to the natural world – especially moths, butterflies, and other insects.
Heindel spent her childhood playing with butterflies, beetles, and cicadas in Southern Maryland, and this experience shaped her for the years to come. She fell in love with insects and never looked back, and they eventually became the centerpiece of her art.
Her love for nature didn’t fade away once she got older, and she decided to learn more about the proper identification and habitats of flora and fauna by studying natural resources and wildlife technology during her college years.
Heindel’s pieces blend her love for nature with her obsession with Victorian art. She uses vintage frames and arranges preserved insects inside them, along with pressed flowers and leaves that truly bring out the best in them.

]]>Hoyes is the mastermind behind Rabbit Hat Designs, and she’s based in Hampshire, England. She fell in love with embroidery while working on her art therapy accreditation in the United States, and she’s been honing her skills ever since.
Hoyes was in love with nature for as long as she can remember, and her family played a crucial role in helping her develop an appreciation for the great outdoors.
“I grew up in a rural area surrounded by animals, creatures, and plants, making stick dens with my brother, having a conservationist sister and a birder and plant lover mum, so I have a big love for everything outdoors,” she explains on her official website.
Hoyes’ art significantly developed over the years, but it’s not a surprise that insects are now one of her main subjects. She’s hoping her embroideries will highlight how many butterfly and insect species are vulnerable to climate change, and remind people how important it is to protect and nurture them.

]]>When they find prey of their liking, mosquitoes will make sure they have a proper feast. Some species are able to drink three-times their body weight in blood in one sitting.
It might seem that mosquitoes are lightning fast when you are chasing them around, but the fact is that they are quite slow. They reach an average speed of 1.5 miles per hour in flight, which is a lot slower compared to bees or flies.
If you are bitten by a mosquito, know that the bite came from a female. Female mosquitoes need the protein in the blood to be able to produce eggs. The males, on the other hand, satisfy themselves with nectar from the plants.
When they have a choice, mosquitoes prefer animals instead of humans. They usually target horses, cattle, and sometimes birds when looking for a victim.
Mosquitoes have the reputation of being among the deadliest creatures on the planet. This is because they carry all sorts of deadly diseases and viruses.

]]>The video shows Thompson discovering a colony of bees in an old red suitcase that was discarded by the road. While there was no food or brood in their hive, the bees seemed “very gentle,” according to Thompson, unless they needed to deal with intruders like wasps.
Since an old suitcase is far from an appropriate home for bees, Thompson decided to provide bees with a new home in which they can thrive. The bees seemed quite happy to leave the suitcase and only needed a bit of smoke to help them move.
The video was watched more than 12 million times, with other TikTok users rushing to show their appreciation for Thompson’s efforts to save the bees.
“You’re singlehandedly doing amazing things for our ecosystem! Thank you for all that you do,” one user wrote.
“You are one of my favorite TikTok accounts! Thank you for the amazing work you do,” another added.

]]>With 1.8 million followers on Instagram and 13.7 million more on TikTok, his social media page @insecthaus_adi became a huge hit thanks to its bizarre content. He’s best known for taking photos and videos that show him putting insects on his face, which people find scary and fascinating at the same time.
Kozakiewicz is currently 24 years old and he’s been active on social media for a few years, but he’s been collecting insects for much longer—since he was about 11 years old.
“Currently I am one of the largest insect breeders in Europe. I undertake several expeditions to tropical regions every year, to search for new and exciting insects species and present them to the world in social media,” explains Kozakiewicz on his official website.
Being based in Germany isn’t stopping him from exploring rare tropical species, and he travels to rainforests of Thailand, Malaysia, and Laos several times a year in search of insects that he can breed from the comfort of his home.

]]>It turned out that the object Farmer spotted wasn’t a piece of metal or some kind of object. It was, in fact, a beetle and a quite rare one. He just stumbled upon Chrysina limbata beetle, which is known for its distinctive shiny silver appearance that makes it look like it’s made out of metal.
Farmer used this unique opportunity to get familiar with the beetle a bit closer and even snapped some photos he later shared on his social media. The photos are quite remarkable and capture the uniqueness of this rare insect.
“[It] was like a mirror. Utterly flawless reflection in the beetle,” he told The Dodo. “Truly one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.”
After the photo session, Farmer decided to let the beetle continue its journey and set it free on a nearby tree. However, it turns out not everyone is so kind.
Chrysina limbata has become quite a rare sight in recent years due to collectors, who are ready to pay a substantial amount of money for these shiny bugs. The loss of habitat also poses a threat to the beetle, which commonly inhabits the tropical forests of Costa Rica, Central America, and Southeast Mexico.
