If you’re struggling to see the immense beauty of insects, Emily Jane Yeadon will help you change your outlook. She’s a talented textile artist, who’s using her body of work to celebrate the species that often go overlooked, including moths, bees, butterflies, and beyond.

Yeadon is a self-taught textile artist from Yorkshire, who’s been sewing tirelessly since 2018. She mastered many different techniques in the meantime, from embroidery and beading to needle felting, and she’s using them all when crafting her unique textile sculptures.

She describes her creations as a testament to my enduring love for wildlife, inspired by her profound connection to nature.

“Drawing on my love of animals, my work aims to unveil the often-overlooked intricacies of nature, fostering in onlookers a newfound reverence for the creatures we cohabit this planet with,” she writes on her official website.

Yeadon uses a combination of fabrics, faux fur, threads, clay, and wool to bring her textile sculptures to life. We’ve seen her pay homage to many different animals since the start of her creative journey, but insects are definitely her favorites. From delicate moths and industrious bees, she enjoys celebrating these overlooked creatures through her art, and her replicas look just as amazing as their real-life contra parts.

Karina Mills is a talented artist who sees beauty everywhere around, even in seemingly bizarre things that most people would rather avoid. She’s the founder of Bewitched Oddities, and many of her creations are giving butterflies, moths, and other insects a second life.

Based in Eugene, Oregon, Mills specializes in crafting perfectly decorated vintage goth frames that look straight out of a Victorian era. She mostly specializes in using insects, including butterflies, moths, and grasshoppers, but we’ve also seen her utilize taxidermy animals, skulls, and bones to make her Bewitched Oddities truly pop.

Mills is on a quest to give flora and fauna used in her work a second life, and she rarely uses objects that haven’t been plucked directly from nature.

“Everything, from the bugs/animals to the moss and flowers I use in my pieces are all real! I try my best to only use real things. Sometimes I incorporate little figurines or paint things different colors, but this will be stated in the listing,” she explains on her official website.

Despite working with flora and fauna, Mills doesn’t want her art to disturb nature, and she would never kill an insect for the sake of art. The ones she uses in her work are sourced from breeders and insect farms, keeping her frames as sustainable as possible.

Butterflies don’t have an extremely long life span after they hatch, but one talented artist found a way for them to stick around a little bit longer. Rita of Moth & Petal is preserving butterflies and insects through her art, breathing new life into these wonderful creatures.

Rita is a talented entomology enthusiast based in Australia, who learned to pin and preserve insects long before she decided to share her talent with the world. She developed this skill while studying ecology and biodiversity conservation at university, and her love for insects never faded away.

After falling in love with the diversity and wonder of the world of entomology, she decided to share her passion with the world and put an artistic twist on the way we see insects. Her framed butterflies are a sight to behold, and they’re doing a great job preserving the beauty of creatures that would live for just a few weeks or days in a meaningful and lasting way.

When it comes to sourcing insects for her art, Rita is very open about the fact she’s getting them from reputable and sustainable insect farms. They’re pretty polarizing among entomologists, but Rita believes that the good outweighs the bad because they usually release large portions of butterflies back to nature, despite raising them in captivity.

Black widow spider has a notorious reputation thanks to their intimidating look and fear of their potentially lethal venom. However, their danger to humans is mostly blown out of proportion. To check out why and learn more about Black Widow spiders, check out these cool facts below.

Black Widow Spider Bites are Rarely Deadly

You might have heard that the black widow is the world’s deadliest spider. However, that isn’t actually true. While their bites can cause severe symptoms, they rarely result in fatal consequences. Additionally, only female black widows are known to bite humans.

Female Black Widow Spiders Have Poor Eyesight

While more dangerous than their male counterparts, female black widows have poor eyesight. In order to get a feel of what is happening around them, they rely on the vibrations of their webs.

Black Widow Spider Webs are Extremely Strong

You probably already know that some spider species can create strong webs. However, the ones created by black widows are considered extremely strong. Scientists are even trying to synthetically replicate them in order to create stronger materials.

Black Widow Spiders Don’t Invade Human Houses and are Helpful

Black widow spiders prefer the outdoors and being surrounded by a lot of vegetation, which is why they don’t invade human houses. They also help humans by controlling the population of pests.

“Beautiful” probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind when you think of insects, but Tak Hau seems to disagree. This talented artist is the founder of Insectism, and he’s using his platform to make people fall in love with insects by transforming them into art.

Tak Hau used to be a successful wedding dress designer but decided to pursue a different passion when the wedding market completely unraveled in the face of the global pandemic in 2020. He was always a fan of entomology and enjoyed framed artwork featuring butterflies and beetles, so he decided to explore this passion further.

Insectism was born after he learned how to set and mount delicate butterflies, and started experimenting with using insects in his artwork.

“My style is a bit outside the box, perhaps rendering something that would make you do a double-take, evoke a fantasy, or stimulate the imagination. I often like creating something that is both beautiful and thought-provoking,” he explains on his Etsy page.

Hau is now on the quest to spark imagination and provoke a conversation through his art, while also using it to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment by always using ethically collected insects in his art.

There was a time when Tala from Florida feared moths and didn’t want to be near them, but that’s ancient history now. Her videos on TikTok and Instagram attracted millions of views after she shared a story about saving a giant moth and raising 200 babies she left behind.

Tala, who describes herself as “Moth Mom”, was a psychology graduate before her life took a wild turn due to a happy accident in 2021. She found a giant moth on her car and decided to take care of her after noticing that a strong breeze blew her to the ground. Tala was scared of bugs and butterflies, but summoned the courage to overcome her fear – and she never looked back.

She took the moth home and noticed she was laying eggs overnight, but by the morning – she was already gone. She left 200 eggs behind, leaving it up to Tala to take care of them with limited resources and very little knowledge about moth care.

“The first time it was very hard; I wanted to keep them. But I know that it’s their nature to go out and mate and continue their cycle, and I didn’t want to ruin that… I missed them, but it was nice to know that they had a good life from the beginning,” she told Epoch Times.

This experience forced Tala to learn everything there is to know about moths, and she’s been in love with them ever since. She now has two million followers on TikTok and 500,000 more on Instagram, and she’s using her platform to spread awareness about these fascinating creatures.

When Ashley Class’s daughter told her there was a monster in her wall, she thought her imagination was running wild, but it turned out her heart was in the right place. The voices wouldn’t stop coming out of the wall, and it eventually turned out that the hive of 50,000 bees was the cause behind all the buzz.

Class’s daughter was convinced there was a monster hiding inside her wall, and her mom eventually decided to take action. She called pest control after noticing a few bees entering the attic of their 100-year-old farmhouse, but several beekeepers told them they were not in the house yet.

Everything changed when Curtis Collins came into the picture and used a thermal camera to discover there was a whole hive behind the wall. He knocked the wall down and what happened next was pretty terrifying to witness.

“Bees came swarming out like a horror movie. There were streams of bees, and the wall where he hit was oozing honey. But it looked like blood because it was really, really dark, running down my daughter’s pink walls. It looked really strange,” she told People.

A beehive of 50,000 bees was discovered behind the wall, weighing more than 100 pounds. Class tried to keep as many alive as possible with Collins’ help, who moved the surviving bees to a local sanctuary after managing to find the queen.

Alaina Michaels has been fascinated by insects for as long as she can remember, and she’s celebrating their beauty on social media. She’s the mastermind behind the Instagram profile The Bug Lady, who’s using her platform to foster a community of people who are equally obsessed with the world of insects.

Michaels is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and collecting insects is much more than just a hobby. She’s an entomologist with a B.S. in organismal biology and a M.Sc. in ecology and evolutionary biology, who spends her days teaching biology at Trident Technical College and volunteering at The Charleston Museum as their resident insect collection curator.

Michaels eventually decided to share her fascination with insects on social media and people took notice. Her Instagram page The Bug Lady became a huge hit with people who are trying to learn more about these curious creatures, and she even started hosting workshops for everyone who’s in the mood to take a deeper dive into the world of entomology.

“Bug lady events have really taken shape over the last year. I host workshops on how to prepare insects as you would for scientific collections, teach all ages about the world of entomology, and will be launching some insect displays for sale on my stories,” she wrote on her Instagram.

Insects rarely get as much love as they deserve, but Beth Hoyes is here to change that. This embroidery artist is using her body of work to celebrate the incredible beauty of butterflies and other insects and raise awareness about their protection.

Hoyes is the mastermind behind Rabbit Hat Designs, and she’s based in Hampshire, England. She fell in love with embroidery while working on her art therapy accreditation in the United States, and she’s been honing her skills ever since.

Hoyes was in love with nature for as long as she can remember, and her family played a crucial role in helping her develop an appreciation for the great outdoors.

“I grew up in a rural area surrounded by animals, creatures, and plants, making stick dens with my brother, having a conservationist sister and a birder and plant lover mum, so I have a big love for everything outdoors,” she explains on her official website.

Hoyes’ art significantly developed over the years, but it’s not a surprise that insects are now one of her main subjects. She’s hoping her embroideries will highlight how many butterfly and insect species are vulnerable to climate change, and remind people how important it is to protect and nurture them.

It’s springtime again, and you know what that means; those pesky mosquitoes are out to get us again. But you shouldn’t hate on them too much, they play an important role in the Earth’s ecosystem. Also, they are quite interesting insects, as you can see by these surprising facts below.

Mosquitoes Can Drink a Lot of Blood

When they find prey of their liking, mosquitoes will make sure they have a proper feast. Some species are able to drink three-times their body weight in blood in one sitting.

Mosquitoes Are Surprisingly Slow

It might seem that mosquitoes are lightning fast when you are chasing them around, but the fact is that they are quite slow. They reach an average speed of 1.5 miles per hour in flight, which is a lot slower compared to bees or flies.

Only Female Mosquitoes Bite

If you are bitten by a mosquito, know that the bite came from a female. Female mosquitoes need the protein in the blood to be able to produce eggs. The males, on the other hand, satisfy themselves with nectar from the plants.

Mosquitoes Prefer to Bite Animals Instead of Humans

When they have a choice, mosquitoes prefer animals instead of humans. They usually target horses, cattle, and sometimes birds when looking for a victim.

Mosquitoes Are the Deadliest Creatures on the Planet

Mosquitoes have the reputation of being among the deadliest creatures on the planet. This is because they carry all sorts of deadly diseases and viruses.
