The post Maria Bertrand’s Sparrow Happy is Truly Living Up to His Name appeared first on penguinmd.
]]>Happy flew into Bertrand’s life when she was on her daily run back in 2020, and he was so tiny it took her a moment to figure out he was actually a sparrow.
“I thought it was a crab at first because he was a day old. So he was just a teeny-tiny, little, little guy with no feathers. He couldn’t see. And so I got closer to him and I realized it was the bird,” the Los Angeles native told Global News.
Taking care of an injured bird in the middle of a pandemic wasn’t easy because she couldn’t find an animal rehab center to take him in. She had to take things into her own hands and feed him food every 20 minutes to keep him alive.
Happy helped Bertrand as much as she helped him, and she says he got her through a really awful time. Her initial plan was to release him into the wild, but that was impossible due to his damaged beak, so she decided to take him in and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

]]>Most geckos have glassy transparent lenses over their eyes instead of eyelids, but leopard geckos are a rare exception to this rule.
Another thing that separates the leopards from other gecko species is the lack of sticky lamellae, which means their climbing abilities aren’t that great.
Most geckos have tails that can regenerate when lost, and that’s also the case with this species. They can also use their tails as a food supply because they can store food inside them, in addition to using them to guard off predators.
One of the most interesting parts of the leopard geckos anatomy are their 100 tiny teeth. They have the ability to replace their teeth every three to four months, known as polyphyodonts.
When not held in captivity, leopard geckos are nocturnal creatures. They avoid the heat of the day by sheltering in different hiding spots and hunt for food at dusk when the temperature is more favorable.

]]>Hoyes is the mastermind behind Rabbit Hat Designs, and she’s based in Hampshire, England. She fell in love with embroidery while working on her art therapy accreditation in the United States, and she’s been honing her skills ever since.
Hoyes was in love with nature for as long as she can remember, and her family played a crucial role in helping her develop an appreciation for the great outdoors.
“I grew up in a rural area surrounded by animals, creatures, and plants, making stick dens with my brother, having a conservationist sister and a birder and plant lover mum, so I have a big love for everything outdoors,” she explains on her official website.
Hoyes’ art significantly developed over the years, but it’s not a surprise that insects are now one of her main subjects. She’s hoping her embroideries will highlight how many butterfly and insect species are vulnerable to climate change, and remind people how important it is to protect and nurture them.

]]>The clip, posted by user @goth_pack, shows a foster dog Freya “finally” becoming confident enough to cuddle with another four-legged member of her foster family, pit bull Labrador mix Briggs. While Freya’s interpretation of cuddling is unusual, as she is lying on top of confused Briggs, it is still an adorable sight.
“When your little foster dog finally has the confidence to cuddle but she’s still a bit awkward,” @goth_pack wrote in the text displayed on the video. TikToker also added that Briggs is “such an angel with small dogs.”
As you might have guessed, Freya’s attempt to cuddle melted the hearts of other TikTok users, who called it “adorable” and “sweetest.” And it turns out that this awkward form of cuddling isn’t all that uncommon.
“My foster gal does that to my bigger pit they lay like that for hours,” @njmomof2weirdos wrote in the comments section.
If you ask us, there is no doubt that Freya will soon be fully comfortable in her new home and get all forms of cuddles possible.

]]>Nguyen created furniture that serves its original purpose but also provides a safe zone for bunnies. It effectively solves messy hay problems while also discreetly hiding the litter box.
“Our bond has strengthened immensely now that we can easily spend more time relaxing in the living room together,” she explains. “Best of all, their hay is no longer an issue, and they ended up loving me more in the process!”
Wanting to help other bunny owners, Nguyen launched a Kickstarter campaign to make her furniture available to the rest of the world. The campaign surpassed its original goal of 20K in just a few hours after being launched and is currently over $33K.
The original run will have two designs available: Bench and Credenza. Bench is a smaller piece and can be used as a large side table.
Credenza is suited for larger apartments, and your rabbit can use it as a full-time home.
The first production run of bunny furniture has already been completed and is shipping out to customers. So, if you want to make your and your bunny’s life a bit easier, make sure to check it out.

]]>The “walking” fish, most likely a member of the sea toad family, received this nickname because it uses its fins to walk on the sea floor. Its other features include “googly” eyes and skin that resembles crochet. Additionally, most of its body is covered with thin needles, which experts say serve as a defense against predators.
“The sea toad has modified fins that allow it to walk on the seafloor—partly a hunting strategy and partly because it’s more energy efficient than swimming,” Javier Sellanes, a marine biologist at the Catholic University of the North in Chile, told National Geographic.
As part of their research, the Schmidt Ocean Institute team mapped four seamounts, also known as underwater mounts, for the first time. According to experts, the “unique nature of the topography of the seamounts” has led to the development of species that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
Schmidt Ocean Institute live-streamed the expedition, which included a 5,000-feet dive from a robotic underwater vehicle, on YouTube. Check out the footage below and see which other amazing sea creatures live in the region.

]]>The bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, is just one of two eagle species that live in North America, with the other one being a golden eagle. There are 60 different eagle species around the world.
Bald eagles are at the top of the food chain in the bird world, and don’t hesitate to show that. When they spot another bird, like a hawk or another eagle, carrying food, they will attempt to steal it or harass the bird until they give it up.
When they find a partner, bald eagles are committed for life. They mate with the same partner every year, build a nest together, and keep the eggs warm until they hatch.
Bald eagles mating for life is even more impressive when you consider they can live between 20 years and 30 years in the wild. In captivity, there were instances in which bald eagles lived up to 50 years.
Finally, you might be wondering why they are called bald when they actually have a head full of feathers. This is because their name originated from the Old English word “balde,” which means “white-headed.”

]]>The post Cool Facts About Zebras That Will Surprise You appeared first on penguinmd.
]]>We don’t blame you for thinking that all zebras belong to one species. However, there are actually three species of zebra—plains zebra, Grévy’s zebra, and mountain zebra—with each having its unique characteristics.
Every zebra has a unique stripes pattern similar to fingerprints in humans. Scientists believe that the black and white color of the stripes helps confuse predators and has some kind of role in regulating heat.
Baby zebras, commonly known as foals, can stand on their own less than 10 minutes after being born. Even more impressive, they can run just one hour later.
Zebras are social animals and usually live in a family that exists as part of herds. The number of individuals in a particular herd varies but sometimes can reach more than 1,000 zebras during migrations to new feeding grounds. It isn’t uncommon that antelope or wildebeest join them in the latter case.
