Every once in a while, an animal so adorable is born that the entire world loses their mind—and that’s exactly what happened two months ago at one zoo in Thailand. Khao Kheow Open Zoo is home to Moo Deng, the adorable baby hippo whose silly antics transformed her into an overnight sensation.

Moo Deng is a two-month-old pygmy hippo, who lives in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi. All hell broke loose after zookeeper Atthapon Nundee started sharing her videos online, boosting the number of zoo visitors to 10,000 in a single weekend, while also transforming her into a true pop culture icon.

Moo Deng’s name means “bouncy pork” in Thai and it was chosen through an online poll, marking the start of her rise to prominence. There’s already a crypto coin named after her, Bowen Yang dressed up as her in a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, and the zoo is planning to give her a 24/7 live stream.

Moo Deng’s popularity attracted so many people to the zoo that the authorities had to do crowd control and warn visitors not to throw objects and water at the hippo in an attempt to attract her attention. Toys and fan art inspired by Moo Deng are showing up all around Thailand and beyond, bringing attention to her vulnerable and elusive species, Choeropsis liberiensis, which is listed as endangered.

Zebras wouldn’t be the same without their stripes, and they’re definitely the most interesting part of this animal’s anatomy. If you’re in the mood to learn more about them, we’re here with five fascinating facts that will rock your world.

100% Unique

Zebra stripes can be compared to human fingertips because they make each zebra 100% unique, even though they may look the same at first glance.

Black Coats + White Stripes

Many people believe that zebras have white coats with black stripes, but a closer look at their unstripped belly and legs proves that it’s actually the other way around.

Social Factor

Stripes can play an important role in the social life of zebras because they can help them recognize each other.

Protection

Stripes make zebras visually striking, but that’s not their main purpose and they actually serve many different functions. They can help these animals protect themselves in the wild because they can use stripes as a form of camouflage, making it difficult for predators to identify them when in large herds.

Bug Repellant

Studies have shown that zebra stripes can be used as a bug-repellant because they play a crucial role in helping zebras regulate their body temperature, thus keeping certain types of insects at bay.

Glen Powell is busy promoting his new movie Twisters, and he’s not the one stealing the spotlight this time around. His dog Brisket has been by his side every step of the way, and he became a true Instagram sensation after joining him for red carpet events and photoshoots.

Brisket is an adorable rescue dog that Powell adopted from the Labelle Foundation while he was in the middle of shooting Twisters. It wasn’t the best time to start taking care of a new pet, but he was going through a tough breakup and felt a sudden desire to have someone to take care of.

He came across a photo of Brisket on Instagram and took a weekend off filming to fly to Los Angeles and pick him up. Brisket quickly became a huge star on the Twisters set, bringing a lot of joy to everyone around him.

“Sets can be very lonely places. And it’s interesting when you see a dog that’s just filling you up with love, how it brings a cast together even more. There’s something wonderful about animals, about how they can bring our walls down a bit and expedite friendships,” he told Entrainment Weekly.

Brisket’s photos immediately go viral every time Powell shares them on his Instagram page, and he even appeared by his owner’s side during a recent Entrainment Weekly photoshoot.

Butterflies don’t have an extremely long life span after they hatch, but one talented artist found a way for them to stick around a little bit longer. Rita of Moth & Petal is preserving butterflies and insects through her art, breathing new life into these wonderful creatures.

Rita is a talented entomology enthusiast based in Australia, who learned to pin and preserve insects long before she decided to share her talent with the world. She developed this skill while studying ecology and biodiversity conservation at university, and her love for insects never faded away.

After falling in love with the diversity and wonder of the world of entomology, she decided to share her passion with the world and put an artistic twist on the way we see insects. Her framed butterflies are a sight to behold, and they’re doing a great job preserving the beauty of creatures that would live for just a few weeks or days in a meaningful and lasting way.

When it comes to sourcing insects for her art, Rita is very open about the fact she’s getting them from reputable and sustainable insect farms. They’re pretty polarizing among entomologists, but Rita believes that the good outweighs the bad because they usually release large portions of butterflies back to nature, despite raising them in captivity.

Dragons have been inspiring writers and artists for centuries, despite the fact they don’t truly exist. Alexey Kashpersky always wished they were real so he decided to do something about it and found the closest thing that comes to a dragon—his albino super crimson iguana Tamerlan.

Kashpersky has been fascinated by dinosaurs and dragons from the first time he encountered them in books as a kid. There was something magical and enchanting about their primal power, and his obsession with dragons didn’t fade away in the years to come.

Kashpersky’s dream of owning his own dragon came true when he adopted Tamerlan. This artificially bred iguana hatched in 2018, and he looks just like a tiny dragon, despite not being anywhere near as fierce because he was born blind due to albinism.

Kashpersky, who is a creative director by trade, decided to share Tamerlan’s story with the world and found viral fame on TikTok and Instagram with Dragon & Me.

“Our goal is to educate people, share rays of positive emotions, inspire with nature’s incomparable beauty, and never stop being creative along our journey… We have grown into a huge community with over half a million dedicated dragon lovers and friends,” he writes on his official website.

Emus are one of the most unique animal species that Australia has in store, and they’ve been fascinating bird lovers for years. We’re bringing you five emu-sing facts about these remarkable flightless birds that will change the way you look at them.

True Giants

Emus are true giants of the avian world. They can reach a weight of up to 60 kg and a height of up to 1.9 meters, which makes them the world’s second tallest bird species behind ostriches.

Quirky Feet

If you pay close attention to emus’ feet, you’ll notice they have three toes, which is one of the reasons behind their high running speed.

Powerful Calf Muscles

The three-toed feet aren’t the only reason behind the emus’ impressive leg power. Their unique pelvic limb musculature also includes gastrocnemius muscles, making them the only bird species with calf muscles.

Incubation Process

Another thing that makes emus unique is their incubation process. Males are the ones incubating the eggs for around eight weeks, and they tend to lose a third of their body weight because they barely eat or drink while waiting for the babies to hatch.

Unique Eyelids

Emus often live in windy arid regions, so they developed two pairs of eyelids, including a translucent, second layer, meant to protect their eyes from the dust.

When Ashley Class’s daughter told her there was a monster in her wall, she thought her imagination was running wild, but it turned out her heart was in the right place. The voices wouldn’t stop coming out of the wall, and it eventually turned out that the hive of 50,000 bees was the cause behind all the buzz.

Class’s daughter was convinced there was a monster hiding inside her wall, and her mom eventually decided to take action. She called pest control after noticing a few bees entering the attic of their 100-year-old farmhouse, but several beekeepers told them they were not in the house yet.

Everything changed when Curtis Collins came into the picture and used a thermal camera to discover there was a whole hive behind the wall. He knocked the wall down and what happened next was pretty terrifying to witness.

“Bees came swarming out like a horror movie. There were streams of bees, and the wall where he hit was oozing honey. But it looked like blood because it was really, really dark, running down my daughter’s pink walls. It looked really strange,” she told People.

A beehive of 50,000 bees was discovered behind the wall, weighing more than 100 pounds. Class tried to keep as many alive as possible with Collins’ help, who moved the surviving bees to a local sanctuary after managing to find the queen.

Tortoises can make really amazing pets, and the 25-year-old woman Gaia learned this first-hand when Mia walked into her life. This adorable Hermann’s tortoise inspired Gaia to learn everything there is to know about tortoise care, and she’s now sharing her knowledge with the rest of the world.

Gaia is a 25-year-old tortoise lover from Italy, who currently resides in New York with her pet tortoise Mia. They’ve been inseparable since late 2022, and Mia was still a hatchling, fresh out of the soil when Gaia decided she wanted to adopt her.

Mia is the first tortoise that Gaia owned, but she wasn’t totally inexperienced when she adopted her because she’s taken care of a lot of turtles in the past. She was a tortoise lover and endless researcher since her childhood years, and it came in handy that she had a tortoise breeder in her family growing up.

Gaia decided to start an Instagram page for Mia shortly after adopting her and used it to mix several of her passions into one. She studied to be a teacher, in addition to attending a few courses about digital marketing and content creation, and that’s why her Instagram page is filled with educational content. She’s using her platform to build a community of tortoise lovers, who are willing to share their knowledge about these amazing creatures with the world.

The days when people stuck to just having dogs and cats as pets are long behind us, and we’ve seen many TikTok and Instagram users go viral thanks to their unusual pet choices. Janie Groeling is one of them, and she’s living her best life with her hermit crabs.

Groeling is a Virginia Tech alum based in New Jersey, who describes herself as a hermit crab mom and bug lover. She attracted thousands of followers to her TikTok and Instagram after she started sharing snippets from her life with her crab pets, including Norton and Tito.

Groeling is using her platform to educate, inspire, and foster a community of hermit crab lovers. You’ll find many hermit crab resources on her Instagram page, providing essential information about basic necessities and care guidelines for new crab owners.

Groeling often holds her hermies in her hands and she makes it look easy, but she’s only able to do this because they built trust over a multitude of years.

“They don’t feel threatened, they know they are safe, they know who I am. I would never hold a hermit crab that is scared/unfamiliar with me. Only when one that trusts me is out and about, I will gently pick up, or they will crawl right onto my hand!” she explains on Instagram.

Many parrots enjoy mimicking human speech, but Kiki decided to take things to the next level and give singing a shot instead. Her vocal abilities wowed many TikTok users, including the Norwegian DJ Alan Walker, and she ended up attracting 3.7 million followers and over 100 million likes on this social media platform.

Kiki lives in Norfolk, England with her owner Grace Robinson, who claims Kiki learned how to sing all on her own. Her attempts to teach her new songs weren’t extremely successful because Kiki enjoys whistling back the tunes she likes, including iPhone ringtone, a wolf whistle, and the funk classic “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire.

“He loves singing to the mirror and if you show him your phone, he’ll do the iPhone ringtone… I’m trying to teach him ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ by Queen but he’s not got it yet. I think maybe he’s running out of storage in his little brain,” her owner told the New York Post.

Kiki the Cockatiel is one of the most popular parrots on TikTok, and she deserves all the attention coming her way. This adorable cockatiel won people over with her musical talent after delivering an amazing cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic song “September”.
