With all the stresses of the modern world, finding your equilibrium isn’t always easy. Follow these steps to reach inner balance.

Say hello to Mother Nature

One sure way to finding a good emotional balance is by connecting with nature, whether it be laying on a beach and listening to the waves crash or by taking a weekend hiking trip with your significant other. The pressures of the outside world often are hard to find while spending some outside time.

Sleep

One of the most common complaints from adults who are struggling with their daily lives is a serious lack of snoozing time. Practice adding an extra hour of sleep each night this week, and notice how your emotional state improves with each slumber!

Become one with your emotions

We often try and block out our emotional self, whether its good or bad, from our minds. This is actually the wrong way to go about it; by acknowledging our emotions and getting in tune with them, we have a better sense of who we are.

We are family…”

Your family and friends are usually the people that know you best. Spend a weekend with those you love to get in touch with your true self.

Soul Food

Researchers have found definitive links between what we put in our bodies and our mental health. The next time you’re at the grocery store, stock up on foods rich in iron and Vitamins C and D, including the highly recommended mulberry tea.

Take a breather

No, literally, take some breaths! Sit in a comfortable place and posture, take 10 deep breaths and focus on the extra oxygen flowing to your brain.

Due to a lack or overproduction of certain hormones, our bodies react to the imbalance with these medical issues.

Hormones

what are they?: Hormones are in your body to regulate your physical and mental functions. Yet when they get out of balance, they can wreak havoc to anyone’s day.

Feeling unwell

A hormonal imbalance can result in: cravings, headache, hair loss, anxiety, fatigue, mood fluctuations, digestion issues, skin problems, fluid retention and more. Sounds like a barrel of fun, huh?

Something more serious

while usually these symptoms are just symptoms, they can occasionally be warning signs of a more serious disease. If you have any of these symptoms and they persist for a week or more, its time to see your doctor.

The cause

Hormonal imbalances can be triggered by something as simple as a change in the weather or a new job. Before sounding the alarm and getting your panties in a bundle, try and assess if there have been any physical or emotional changes in your life.

All in the habits

Most doctors recommend changing your lifestyle if hormonal imbalance is what you’re complaining about. It could be a shift as simple as getting an hour more sleep at night or switching from two cups of coffee per day to one.

Like food and water all living organisms require sleep in order to function and subsequently survive. It is a vital component in every person’s life and neglecting the required amount of hours needed to function properly can most definitely have a negative effect on your health and well-being. We are certainly not arguing with Science in this regard, we mean, who doesn’t love a nap?

The exact amount of sleep a person needs is based on a variety of different factors including age and quality of sleep. The truth is that getting as little as 4 hours of sleep a night is almost the equivalent of staying up all night. Statistics suggest that driving after pulling an all-nighter is equal to driving while under the influence of alcohol and that sleep deprivation is responsible for almost 100,000 traffic accidents, 76,000 injuries, and 1,500 deaths every year.

As we mentioned before, the amount of sleep required in order for a person to stay healthy and function at their best is dependent on different factors. Children over the age of 6 generally need at least 9 hours of sleep a night, while teenagers can function off between 8 and 10. With the onset of puberty some teens may need to rest a bit more or even an afternoon nap. Adults should be fitting in between seven and nine hours a night. As you get older sleep patterns change and you might find that naps as opposed to long nights serve your need for rest better. Sleep patterns change as one gets older.

That pounding headache that lasts for hours…migraines are no laughing mater. So what exactly sets them off, and how can you tell if you’re getting one?

TRIGGERS

Migraine headaches can be caused by inner forces, such as stress, lack of protein and exhaustion. They can also be triggered by pollution, increase in light, change in weather and noise.

TYPES

Migraines are three times more common in women than they are men. Roughly 75% of sufferers have migraines with aura, an episode of altered vision, while only ¼ get them without.

SYMPTOMS

Sufferers report intense pounding pain, ringing in their ears, nausea or vomiting, and disorientation. As if these don’t sound bad enough, most of the symptoms can last for hours or days on end.

Diagnosis and treatment

Many people who have frequent migraines are well aware of the problem. If you’re unsure, its best to check with your medical professional for diagnosis and treatment.

Your skin will thank you for using this natural moisturizer. The benefits are endless and you won’t regret it. You can find some pretty cheaply and in some wonderful scents. Once you’ve got it, you’ll find so many ways to use it, but we’ve got five to help get your started.

  1. Moisture Master – As a daily moisturizer, cocoa butter is master of them all. Give your skin a treat with the fatty acids of the butter, which increases moisture retention.
  2. Treat for Chapped Lips – Cocoa butter is the best for chapped lips and mixed with scented oil, like orange, peppermint or lavender, it can work hard and smell great.
  3. Wrinkles Away – The anti-ageing properties of cocoa butter increase the elasticity of your skin and will take years off your face.
  4. Burn Treatment – Use cocoa butter to soothe nasty burns. Make sure to use a butter without alcohol and other fragrances that might further irritate skin. It’s a natural way to help skin heal.
  5. Treating eczema and dermatitis – Its gentle enough to use on eczema and can help ease rashes or dermatitis. Just gently rub a small amount of butter on the affected area and let the magic cocoa butter do its work.

Healthy living, and healthy eating, means taking a hard look at your intake and seeing what you need, what you want, and what really shouldn’t be there. Here we have five of the most important things to reduce or even cut completely from your diet.

There are many things we eat without even thinking about the consequences, or even more often, things we eat that we think are healthy and part of a healthy lifestyle. Taking a good hard look at what’s going in our mouths might be a reckoning we’d rather live without, but it’s important to really take stock. Here are a few things to take a look at and consider removing from your life, permanently.

1. Juice and Soda

We will start with the toughest, but the best. Flavored and sugary drinks are just gigantic calorie pools that you won’t even notice you are swimming in. Even “natural” juices like orange juice, apple juice, and many smoothie brands, can hold a shocking number of calories. Individual bottles of smoothies can hold up to three or four hundred calories – the equivalent of two bagels! Without even noticing, you can be drinking an entire meal during the day. Instead of being fooled into thinking that you need a juice or smoothie in order to refuel and have energy for the rest of the day, try a couple glasses of ice water during the day to keep cravings at bay.

2. “Suggested” Amounts

It is nothing to be ashamed off, most of us take the portion suggestions that we get, without even thinking about where they are coming from. When cookies or chips come in packages, most of us assume that specific amount is the amount that we are supposed to be eating. It might be six Oreos in a mini-pack, or a “single-serve” can of Pringles – whatever it may be, those suggested amounts are just that, a suggestion. Eat what you want, in the amounts that are right for you. Do not be fooled into thinking that just because something says its single-serve, means you need to eat it. More shocking is that more often than not, packages that companies try to pass off as single-serve are actually marked as being for 2 or 2.5 people in the calorie information.

3. Coffee Cream

People always say, the devil is in the details, and that is definitely true with our diets. Often, it’s not the big donuts and large plates of pasta that are really causing the problems, it’s the little things we add to our stomach without even noticing. Adding cream and sugar to your coffee multiplies the calories in a coffee by almost 100%. By sticking to milk or skim milk only, you can cut out a whole lot of unnecessary. You also might find that you can appreciate the real taste of coffee even better once you’ve taken out all the additives!

4. Ketchup

This one is going to be a toughie for so many people, but wait a minute and hear us out. Ketchup might be a vegetable according to some sources, but really, it’s mostly just sweet corn syrup. That extra sugar is a calorie punch to your gut, in the form of sugars that we cannot digest properly. Americans may put ketchup on everything, but that means everything is going to taste like ketchup. With a whole world of flavor to enjoy, it seems sad to reduce all food to one taste. Cutting out the ketchup can unlock a world of experience, and save your stomach some serious damage.

5. The Last Drink

When heading out for happy hour with friends, chances are you will be throwing back quite a few. Whether its beer or liquor, alcohol has more calories than the liquor companies would like you to know – hence the lack of labeling on many bottles. By cutting out just once of the drinks you would have had, you can save some serious calories. It might seem like a moment of fun, but that last shot is going to last a lot longer than you would prefer. Keeping the alcohol intake at bay can do wonders not only for your weight, but for your skin and appetite as well.

In today’s day and age spending 9 plus hours in front of a computer has become somewhat commonplace. Countless professions require focused employees to be fully engaged in what is going on online and therefore to be glued to their computer screens all day. Have you ever thought about what sitting all day does to your butt? Have you noticed that while your career may be progressing your butt has totally lost its perk? Well, have no fear because we’ve done the research for you and you’ll find all the answers right here.

The downside is that while you are working hard at whatever is going on, on that computer screen your glutes stop working completely. And this is bad news: not only for your butt but for your entire body. You butt muscles – better known as your glutes are in fact responsible for your hip movement, pelvis rotation and stability as well as your posture, therefore sitting all day also affects your flexibility and in turn your entire gym routine and also cause pain in other parts of your body.

The upside is that there are plenty of things you can do to counteract this “damage”. Watch your posture, a straighter spine can work wonders as can a regular workout regimen. Making sure you are sitting properly at your desk with the correct support in the form of a chair and desk height is imperative for your body. So is hitting the gym. Not only to get your heart pumping, but for stretching, activity and improving the flexibility and mobility you are hindering by sitting all day!

These natural and wholesome products contain fats that are actually healthy and we could not be happier to leave the days of fat-free foods behind. However, in this brave new world there is one thing that can get in the way of enjoying healthy fats, and that's stress. A new study suggests that stress can affect your ability to metabolize fats and reduce the number of calories that your body can burn.

In recent years, there’s been quite a bit of talk about “healthy” fats, nutritionists and dieticians have prompted us to take a closer look at real butter, olive oil and coconut oil. These natural and wholesome products contain fats that are actually healthy and we could not be happier to leave the days of fat-free foods behind. However, in this brave new world there is one thing that can get in the way of enjoying healthy fats, and that’s stress. A new study suggests that stress can affect your ability to metabolize fats and reduce the number of calories that your body can burn.

According to the study at Ohio State University, stress changes the way our body processes food. Researchers studied subjects who ate a high calorie, healthy fat breakfast after a stressful event. They found that fewer calories were burned and the healthy fats were even treated the same as “bad” fats. There are a number of factors that can affect weight-loss, and it is clear that stress is one of them. In addition to changing our bodies’ natural response to food, stress causes increased eating (think comfort food) and can reduce the likelihood of exercise. There are so many reasons to manage stress well, and this is certainly a compelling one.

Five Ways Water is Really the Best Thing For You https://penguinmd.com/why-water-is-the-best-thing-there-is/ https://penguinmd.com/why-water-is-the-best-thing-there-is/#respond Sun, 02 Jan 2022 09:24:41 +0000 https://penguinmd.com/why-water-is-the-best-thing-there-is/ The simplest thing in the world is also the most necessary. The simplest thing in the world is also the most necessary. When it comes to real health and healthy living, water is one of the best things for us. For years we’ve been told that orange juice, tomato juice, kale juice – whatever, these are the best things for keeping us healthy and hydrated.

But, the truth is that it was simple H2O just sitting there are waiting for us to realize how wonderful it really is. By bringing water back in to your life, you will be benefiting in a big way. Take a look at what water is really for, why it’s the best, and how it can work hard for you.

1. Kick Starting Your Day

Coffee has gotten the reputation as the drink of the morning, OJ is the beverage for a healthy start to your day. But we are here to tell you, that water could replace both. A glass of ice water in the morning is the healthiest way to start your day with a punch. Refreshing, cool and calorie free, a glass of water has been shown to improve your wakeup routine and improve your performance when you’re starting off early in the day. For the truly lazy, keep a glass of water by your bedside so you can start your day off right, right away.

2. Keeping You Focused

By staying hydrated during the day, you will see some serious improvements to your performance in terms of focus. Often small headaches and fatigue are the result of dehydration. Our body might misinterpret and think that we’re hungry or need a dose of sugar, but try drinking a glass of cool water before you head for a muffin and see if the feelings pass.

3. Keeping Cravings at Bay

Much like water can help keep you focused, water can help you be better at regulating what kinds of food and nutrients you really need. Often, when our body starts exhibiting signs of hunger, it’s really thirst that we’re feeling. When you start feeling those midmorning munchies, your instinct will be to head for the candy stash or thrown down a bag of chips. Take a breath before you do and try for some water instead.

4. Your Skin

Staying hydrated is for so much more than your appetite. The largest organ of our body, our skin, needs serious care. One of the easiest and simplest things you can do for your skin is to keep it hydrated. By drinking enough water, especially if you are consuming alcohol, you’ll save your skin a whole lot of heartache. For those of us trying to keep our complexion at its best, drinking enough water is the best way to start. While your face creams works hard to smooth your face from the outside, what you drink will be doing its job from the inside out.

5. The Best Exercise

If you want to enjoy all the benefits of your workout, you need to make sure you’ve had enough to drink. If you’re feeling down in the middle of your Zumba class, take the suggested water break. You might be happy to find that you are ready to make it through the rest of your class. By keeping a water bottle at your side on the treadmill, you will be able to work out harder, for longer. For the very best in working out, keeping the water on hand and don’t be skimpy on the water breaks.

Most of our bodies are already made of it, so it’s no wonder that water is so good for us. With the influx of sodas and energy drinks on the market, water has really taken a back seat. But we’re happy to see a growth in the number of water fountains and bottle filling stations that are popping up all over the place. With so much fresh water available on hand, there is no excuse for staying away from wonderful water.

We all know that good health is measured according to a wide variety of different things including but exclusive to our diet. Daily intake of veggies and water for example, exercise or how many times we go to the gym and other lifestyle choices, like smoking, drinking etc. But one of the most talked about and an anticipated health issue is that of heightened cholesterol.

Now don’t be fooled, our bodies actually needs the waxy substance found in our cell membranes to function, it primarily aids in the creation of certain hormones and vitamins, but on the same breath, one should know, that too much cholesterol can be really bad for you. Especially if it starts clogging up your arteries. But as with everything there are myths and truths and how to maintain healthy cholesterol levels there are a few.

1. Dairy and eggs –  are not the enemy, despite being high in fat and cholesterol you just need to manage your intake

2. Your annual checkup at the doctor should be able to tell you whether your cholesterol levels are high, if so how you can manage them.

3. Statin pills are not necessarily the answer to reducing your cholesterol.

4. While fat isn’t always the healthiest, saturated fat is not actually cholesterol. Again it’s about managing your intake.

5. The goal is to keep your cholesterol below 200. Manage carefully what you eat and find the balance. And don’t forget to visit your doc.

Stress Gets in the Way of Weight Loss https://penguinmd.com/stress-gets-in-the-way-of-weight-loss/ https://penguinmd.com/stress-gets-in-the-way-of-weight-loss/#respond Sun, 02 Jan 2022 23:46:19 +0000 https://penguinmd.com/stress-gets-in-the-way-of-weight-loss/ In recent years, there’s been quite a bit of talk about “healthy” fats, nutritionists and dieticians have prompted us to take a closer look at real butter, olive oil and coconut oil.
