]]>Gaia is a 25-year-old tortoise lover from Italy, who currently resides in New York with her pet tortoise Mia. They’ve been inseparable since late 2022, and Mia was still a hatchling, fresh out of the soil when Gaia decided she wanted to adopt her.
Mia is the first tortoise that Gaia owned, but she wasn’t totally inexperienced when she adopted her because she’s taken care of a lot of turtles in the past. She was a tortoise lover and endless researcher since her childhood years, and it came in handy that she had a tortoise breeder in her family growing up.
Gaia decided to start an Instagram page for Mia shortly after adopting her and used it to mix several of her passions into one. She studied to be a teacher, in addition to attending a few courses about digital marketing and content creation, and that’s why her Instagram page is filled with educational content. She’s using her platform to build a community of tortoise lovers, who are willing to share their knowledge about these amazing creatures with the world.

]]>Chas is the mastermind behind the Instagram page @through.the.lleaves, who has 800,000 Instagram followers under her belt. She describes herself as a “shamelessly extra pet parent”, who has four cats Kusa, Gouda, Beifong, and Seymour, a dog Zuko, a lizard Goji, and the absolute star of the show – the tortoise Fig.
Fig became a true sensation after Chas shared a video that captures one day in his life, showing him doing everything from hanging around with cats to playing in a bowl of water and enjoying a fun day outside.
Chas’ videos make the whole thing look easy, but she admits everyone should think twice before adopting a pet tortoise.
“Tortoises are such a huge commitment. They grow to be SO big and need a lot of outdoor space to roam… They are absolutely wonderful pets, so smart, have amazing personalities, but are one of the hardest pets to own so please consider this,” she explained on her Instagram page.

]]>Over the years, Seashell had her fair share of runaways, including the one in 2021 when she decided to break through the wooden backyard gate and explore what the outside world has in store for her. She ended up being spotted by the officers from Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, who managed to reunite her with her owners. And then the same thing happened just a few weeks ago.
Bexar County Sheriff’s Office shared on their Facebook page that Seashell’s adventurous spirit got the best of her again. She went missing for a few days, giving her family a world of worry before one of the deputies spotted her on the street. He notified his supervisor, who immediately knew who the wanderer was; it was the same tortoise that he had returned to San Antonio native Mayda Garcia and her family two years ago.
Acting on the supervisor’s directive, deputy Joe Garza “arrested” the 60-pound tortoise, placed her in the back of his vehicle, and then took her home. After successfully completing the task, Garza was “presented with an award by his sergeant and lieutenant for catching the tortoise involved in the slowest foot pursuit Bexar County has ever seen!”
“This isn’t our first run-in with Seashell, and with Seashell’s track record, we assume it probably won’t be the last!” Bexar County Sheriff’s Office added in the Facebook post.
