Green sea turtles got their name from the green color of the fat that’s under their shell. Unlike other sea turtles, they have a single pair of prefrontal scales (other species have two pairs). Here are three facts about these magnificent creatures.

Size

Green sea turtles are one of the largest turtle species in the world. They can grow up to 3 or 4 feet in length and weigh up to around 400 pounds. The largest one ever found was 5 feet in length and weighed 871 pounds, according to Conserve Turtles.

Hatching

Babies that spend around two months in eggs use their special “egg tooth” to break the shell and hatch from the egg.

Eating Habits

Eating habits are another thing where green sea turtles are different from most other sea turtles. They are herbivorous who prefer feeding on algae and seagrass. Young green turtles will also eat crabs, sponges, and jellyfish.
